What are 'Grandes Écoles'

Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine (INPL) is a public University of Technology. It federates seven “Grandes Écoles” (Graduate Engineering Schools) and a School of Architecture

What are 'Grandes Écoles' ?

They are state-run or private institutions of higher education characterized by :

  • highly selective admission procedures : access to “Grandes Ecoles” is restricted to the best 10% of  high-school students

  • small size (300 to 4,000 students)

  • flexible educational programs

  • strong links with industry and business : compulsory internships (in France and abroad), contracts with companies

  • besides academic research, strong involvement in contract research with companies

  • active alumni networks

  • international networks: exchange of students, faculty and staff, double-degree programs

  • mandatory foreign language training

The Grandes Ecoles award degrees recognized by the French Ministry of Education: the “diplôme d’ingénieur” and the “diplôme de management” after successful completion of 5 years of studies beginning after the “baccalauréat” (French secondary school diploma).
These degrees confer respectively the title of “Master of Science” and “Master in Management” as defined in the new European system of higher education. Broad theoretical knowledge combined with practical training make “Grandes Ecoles” students particularly adaptable beyond their field of specialization. The rigorous selection and close supervision of the students guarantee a high rate of success.

Over 80 % of the managing directors and the chief executives in France's 100 largest firms are "Grandes Ecoles" graduates. 14 % of recent graduates find their first job abroad.
