Educational Program

The usual duration of studies is two years (four semesters) . INPL, like every European university, functions on a credit system known as the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS credits represent the volume of work that the student must produce for each module. A total of 60 credits represents the volume of work for a year of studies (30 credits per semester). At INPL, 1 ECTS credit is equivalent to approximately 30-hour actual student’s work (lectures + tutorials, lab work + homework) The Master curriculum is a 120 ECTS Credit program.

The first year is referred to as M1 and the second year as M2. The first two semesters consist of a number of mandatory courses and of a number of optional courses. The second year (M2) consists of a number of mandatory and optional courses during the first semester. The second semester consists of a research project in a laboratory.

The first academic year (M1) starts in September and ends in June. The second year (M2) starts in September and the ending date depends on the progress of the research project. In any case, the project is usually defended between June and September.

Depending on the Master’s programs, examinations take place at the end of the first semester or at the end of the year.

Tuition language

Most courses are given in French. Therefore a good command of the French language is essential.

INPL provides intensive French courses for the students who are not proficient in French. For further information and prices, please consult the CAFOL web site or contact cafol@mines.inpl-nancy.fr

INPL also organizes yearly a Summer Program (pdf, 57 kb) from mid-May to mid-July designed for foreign students wishing to join INPL.

Examinations and assessment

The knowledge acquired by the student is assessed in the following way :

In the first three semesters :
- Written exams at the end of each semester (January and June)
In the fourth semester :
- for Master of science programs with thesis : written report and oral defence of the research work
- for vocational Master of science programs : written and oral defence of the industrial placement work

The work is marked out of 20 and each test may be weighed by a coefficient. Details of exams and (and coefficients) are published at the beginning of the year. Each lecturer is responsible for specifying the type of exam that he/she will set at the beginning of the course that he/she teaches.

Validation of a year’s studies (enabling the student to move on to the next year or to obtain the diploma) is announced by the end of year jury. Pass level is 10 out of 20.

Admission requirements

The Master’s degree program with research thesis is of particular interest to foreign students because admission is not subject to a competitive examination. Admission is open to students who hold a Bachelor of Science degree or any equivalent diploma.
